The objective of this program is to provide theoretical and practical training aimed at enabling students acquire microbiological knowledge and techniques necessary for industries such as breweries, food processing and preservation, water works, pharmaceuticals, and research institutions. In addition, the program aims to train students where appropriate to acquire the knowledge necessary for healthcare delivery especially in pathological and immunological laboratories and to monitor environmental pollution.

The curriculum is delivered by dedicated, motivated, research active staff, who provide up-to-date information in their respective disciplines. A range of teaching and assessment techniques are used, and due emphasis is given to the development of generic transferable skills (IT, communication, teamwork, self-management, problem solving) for the employment market.
At least 5 papers in GCE Ordinary level including English, Mathematics and Chemistry before obtaining 2(two) GCE Advanced level passes one in either Biology, Botany, Zoology or Human Biology.
Universities, research institutes and industrial companies employ microbiologists to do basic, environmental, healthcare and agricultural research. Medical microbiologists also work in hospitals. Industrial microbiologists work in a range of companies – from big pharmaceutical, biochemical, biotechnology and food businesses through to smaller firms that develop biopharmaceuticals or specialist products.
Microbiologists work in bioscience and food companies. They carry out research and develop new products or work in quality control to monitor manufacturing processes and check the microbiological safety of goods such as medicines, cosmetics, toiletries, biochemicals and food and drink.
