Biochemistry Program

SPECIALTY :  Biochemistry

DURATION :   3 years (6 Semesters)

DEGREE IN VIEW :  Bachelor of Science (BSc)

DEPARTMENT :  Biochemistry

FACULTY :  Faculty of Science (FS)

Category :   Undergraduate

Encompassing the study of the molecular, cellular and physiological bases of life, Biochemistry has provided insights into many of the problems that have fascinated and perplexed biologists for generations. Its central role in biology ensures that there is a growing demand for graduates with expertise in this area. This course aims to provide you with a sound training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of this rapidly developing subject.

Mission

To provide instruction in biochemistry at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to carry out scientific research adapted to the changing needs of the society. The undergraduate program is designed to provide tools, techniques and thinking in such a way as to enable the graduates to find gainful employment in areas where biochemistry knowledge is required and to have the adequate background necessary for the pursuit of studies and research in biochemistry and related fields at the postgraduate level. The department, through its programs, also seeks to satisfy the evolving needs of biochemistry users.

Program Objectives

The Biochemistry degree program trains biochemists with a modern view of the living world and its environment. It provides theoretical and practical training that enables the student to identify, isolate, purify, quantify and elucidate the structures of important biomolecules from tissues and organs. A graduate in Biochemistry should understand, interpret and explain biochemical data that account for the complexity, diversity and unity of life forms; assess the dynamic processes of the transformation of matter and energy in living cells. Emphasis is laid on fundamental principles governing heredity, genetic information transfer, expression and regulation; chemical basis of the origin of life and evolution. Attention is paid to applications of biochemical concepts to improve production, enhance environmental management, service industries and biotechnology. A quantitative approach involving the use of chemical and physical principles is employed to explain underlying biological processes.

Education

The curriculum is delivered by dedicated, motivated, research active staff, who provide up-to-date information in their respective disciplines. A range of teaching and assessment techniques are used and due emphasis is given to the development of generic transferable skills (IT, communication, teamwork, self-management, problem solving) for the employment market.

We have very good science labs for practical works in all science fields offered.

Admission Requirement

Candidates must have passed at least 2 GCE Advanced Level subjects, one in Biology, Botany, Zoology or Human Biology, and the other in another science subject. The Baccalaureate series C and D are also acceptable.

Career Opportunities

The Biochemistry program is conceived to produce graduates who are competent, knowledgeable and skillful and who can survive change and adapt to it. They can be employed in: food industries, the health sector, agriculture and animal production, research, teaching, biotechnology and related industries; they can also go into management, marketing (as sales representatives of chemical and pharmaceutical industries). The graduate will be endowed with the capacity for self-employment and continued self-education.

Fees

The tuition fee per year is 502,500 FCFA for Cameroonians and 1,045,500 FCFA for foreign students. To read more about fees click here.
