Business Anthropology, a subfield of Applied Anthropology, involves the application of anthropological theories and methods to the study of organizations, marketing and consumer behaviour, and design. At the core of this course is the anthropological interest in culture and how that shapes behaviours and beliefs. Business Anthropology is important because it helps organizations better understand the motivations and behaviours of organizational actors streamline the user experience, enhance marketing campaigns, and create more inclusive companies.

Mission

It is the mission of the Department of Anthropology to provide a curriculum that will help students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diversity and complexity of the human experience culturally, biologically and historically. It is our mission to engage in innovative anthropological scholarship that contributes to the development of communities.

Program Objectives

  1. The objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Business Anthropology are to:

    • Provide students with academic knowledge and competences so that they are capable of independently identifying, formulating and solving complex problems within the relevant constituent parts of the subject areas.
    • Provide students with strong theoretical, methodological and ethical foundations to tackle current issues in work practices, occupational communities, market settings and multinational organisations in the global market context.
    • Enable the students to recognise the role of culture in organisations both at the operational and organisational levels.
    • Equip students with the capacity to analyse the role of cultural factors in the context of organisational issues, design, new product development and customer relationships;
    • Using cross-cultural approaches, the course will construct a number of strategic management techniques in the business domain.
