Geography & Environmental Studies Departmental Field Trip


In a bid to match theory with field realities, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies organized a one day field trip within Bamenda and its environs. The field trip which involved all the staff of the Department and Levels One to Three students took place on Friday 21 st November 2014 from 9:am to 4pm. The Department visited the following areas:

  • The Bamenda Station - Akum Axis with a view of appreciating hydro-geomorphological processes (slope/road failure, soil creep, cambering) and their effect on construction and other human activities.

  • The Bamenda City Council. Here the focus was on the process of urban development in Bamenda, the role of the Bamenda City Council in Urban Development, challenges and sustainability strategies.

  • Sabga Hills: Here emphasis was placed on the place of the Sabga Hills in the Cameroon Volcanic Line, the volcanic processes and features produced there, plant succession and cattle grazing features.

  • The Mulang Wetland environment: where focus on the meaning and nature of wetlands, wetland colonization, role of wetlands, management of wetlands and problems involved.

Speaking at the end of the fieldtrip, the Head of Department (
Dr. Kimengsi Jude), on behalf of the staff expressed satisfaction with the areas visited and the discussions for the day. He praised the students’ level of seriousness in following-up with the lectures. He further instructed the students to prepare their individual field trip reports which will be submitted within two weeks for grading. The students on their part expressed satisfaction on the knowledge gained out of class for the whole day.
It should be noted that the Department is planning another extended fieldtrip in January 2015.
