Department of Geology
Undergraduate Program in Geology.
Through practical activities with interactive media and fieldwork trips to sites of geological interest you will gain a better appreciation of how our planet evolved. At the same time you will be developing the practical and analytical skills sought by many employers. Students are often attracted to Geology because it’s closely related to many other science disciplines. The degree will allow you to develop a variety of transferable skills that are highly valued in the labour market, such as analytical, numerical and communication skills, teamwork, problem solving and proficiency in using computers.
Mission Statement of the Department of Geology
To provide instruction in geology at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to carry out scientific research adapted to the changing needs of the society. The undergraduate program is designed to provide tools for techniques and thinking in such a way as to enable the graduates to find gainful employment in areas in which geological knowledge is required and to have the adequate background necessary for the pursuit of studies and research in geology and related fields at the postgraduate level. The department, through its programs, also seeks to satisfy the evolving needs of geology and users geological techniques in Cameroon and around the world.
Objectives of the Program
Geology is an applied science which aims to train students to understand and interpret the physical, chemical and structural nature of the Earth in relation to other planets. The programme has therefore been designed to cover the mineral and petroleum resources of the Earth: their availability, exploration and exploitation techniques, as well as global environmental and hydrogeological issues. Accordingly, it incorporates aspects of Environmental Geology and Applied Geology. The objective has been to meet the manpower demands in industries, research institutes and the teaching field, and at the same time incorporate the evolutionary trends in the subject. The programme prepares students for postgraduate specializations in both Applied Geology and Environmental Geology depending on his/her abilities and aptitudes.
The curriculum is delivered by dedicated, motivated, research active staff, who provide up-to-date information in their respective disciplines. A range of teaching and assessment techniques are used and due emphasis is given to the development of generic transferable skills (IT, communication, teamwork, self-management, problem solving) for the employment market.
Any two "A" levels chosen from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geology and Geography. Equivalent qualification in the BAC exams is acceptable.
Future,Career and Employment
Employment opportunities for graduates with this background are similarly diverse and include :
Teaching in Colleges, Universities etc
Engineering facilities such as site investigations
Exploration for petroleum, minerals, water resources.
Environmental Geologists – Geo-hazards, (landsides, volcanism, etc.) mining and related pollution.
The fast growing mining sector of Cameroon probably suggest that there are employment opportunities for graduates of this program.Graduates on this program are well placed to pursue further studies in Geology or a related subject area.
The tuition fee per year is 645,500 F CFA for Cameroonians and 1,045,500 F CFA for foreign students. To read more about fees click here.
