UndergraduateEncompassing the study of the molecular, cellular and physiological bases of life, Biochemistry has provided insights into many of the problems that have fascinated and perplexed biologists for generations. Its central role in biology ensures that there is a growing demand for graduates with expertise in this area. This course aims to provide you with a sound training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of this rapidly developing subject.
Mission Statement of the Department
To provide instruction in biochemistry at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to carry out scientific research adapted to the changing needs of the society. The undergraduate programme is designed to provide tools, techniques and thinking in such a way as to enable the graduates to find gainful employment in areas where biochemistry knowledge is required and to have the adequate background necessary for the pursuit of studies and research in biochemistry and related fields at the postgraduate level. The department, through its programmes, also seeks to satisfy the evolving needs of biochemistry users.
Objectives of the Degree Program
The Biochemistry degree programme trains biochemists with a modern view of the living world and its environment. It provides theoretical and practical training that enables the student to identify, isolate, purify, quantify and elucidate the structures of important bio-

Minor in Medical Laboratory Technology
The professional minor in Medical Laboratory Technology is open to students, especially in the department of Life Sciences. A total of 6 courses are offered, two each session totaling 36 Credits. These courses are tailored to orientate students towards professionalisation. It is hoped that at the end of the programme graduates may find useful employment, or be self-
Admission Requirement
Candidates must have passed at least 2 GCE Advanced Level subjects, one in Biology, Botany, Zoology or Human Biology, and the other in another science subject. The Baccalaureate series C and D are also acceptable.
Future,Career and Employment
The Biochemistry programme is conceived to produce graduates who are competent, knowledgeable and skilful and who can survive change and adapt to it. They can be employed in: food industries, the health sector, agriculture and animal production, research, teaching, biotechnology and related industries; they can also go into management, marketing (as sales representatives of chemical and pharmaceutical industries). The graduate will be endowed with the capacity for self employment and continued self education.
